VAGGELIS THEODORIDIS is a nowadays contemporary artist. He was born in Thessaloniki (Greece) in 1980. During his academic life, he assisted to different art courses and classes, and he entered the School of Art of Higher Education at the University of Athens.
By any chance, IMPRESIONISMO EN FEMENINO (@impresionis_ief) found him on Twitter (@VTheodoridisArt) one afternoon, and his author couldn’t resist to visit his Official Website in order to get to know his art works.
Although they aren´t Impressionist works and they aren’t directly related to women, I should say that his art works surprised me positively. Every surprise comes out with an Impression and, in this case, as I was saying, it was a really good one.
Once again, the new technological apps, Twitter at this time, made me easier to get personally in touch with Vaggelis, despite of the geographical distance between our countries.
But, talking about acknowledgements, we should say thank you for the interview to the principal protagonist of this post. Let’s say thank you to Vaggelis Theodoridis, who, very kindly, answered all the questions of IMPRESIONISMO EN FEMENINO.

VAGGELIS THEODORIDIS es un artista contemporáneo actual. Nació en Thessaloniki (Grecia) en 1980. Durante su vida académica, asistió a diversas clases y cursos de arte, y se licenció en Arte por la Universidad de Atenas.
Por alguna casualidad del destino, IMPRESIONISMO EN FEMENINO (@impresionis_ief) se encontró una buena tarde con él en Twitter (@VTheodoridisArt), y su autora no pudo resistir la tentación de visitar su Web Oficial para conocer sus obras.
Pese a no tratarse de obras pertenecientes al movimiento impresionista, y pese a no estar relacionadas directamente con la mujer, debo decir que sus trabajos me sorprendieron gratamente. Toda sorpresa conlleva una Impresión, que, en este caso, fue muy buena. Lo suficiente como para desear contactar con el artista.
Una vez más, las nuevas aplicaciones tecnológicas, y, en este caso, el sistema de nannoblogging, Twitter, hicieron de las suyas, facilitándome contactar directamente con Vaggelis, salvando las distancias geográficas que separan a nuestros países de residencia.
Pero, puestos a agradecer, agradezcamosle esta entrevista al gran protagonista de esta entrada, que no es otro que el propio Vaggelis Theodoridis, quien, muy amablemente, no dudó en aceptar contestar a todas las preguntas de IMPRESIONISMO EN FEMENINO.

IMPRESIONISMO EN FEMENINO: When did you discover and start your interest in art? / ¿Cuál fue el origen de tu interés por las artes plásticas?
VAGGELIS THEODORIDIS: Well, as long as I remember myself and the truth is that I was always into constructing things using colors, collage and materials coming from nature. / Desde que tengo uso de razón, lo cierto es que siempre he fabricado cosas, usando colores, collage y materiales naturales.
IEF: Why did you choose painting as form of artistic expression, instead of any other kind of art? / ¿Por qué escogiste la pintura como forma de expresión artística, y no otro tipo de arte?
VT: I believe that nowadays we cannot distinguish different kinds of art. Personally, I am interested in classic forms of art and I could not imagine myself without painting. I express myself through my art. / Pienso que hoy en día no pueden distinguirse diferentes formas de arte. Personalmente, estoy interesado en las formas de expresión tradicionales, y no podría imaginarme mi vida sin pintar. El arte es mi foma de expresión.

IEF: You’ve chosen wood as the principal component of your art works. Is this importance you give to wood something you always knew it would be like this? / Has escogido la madera como el principal componente de tus obras. ¿Siempre tuviste claro que la madera debía tener un papel prioritario en tu obra?
VT: No, my first work was pure painting. I started using wood the last six years and I chose it incidentally. / No, en mi primera obra utilicé solo pintura. Comencé a trabajar con la madera hace seis años y fue una elección que tomé por casualidad.
IEF: Why have you chosen mixed media? Have you ever used any other technique, like oil painting or pastel? / ¿Por qué has elegido la técnica mixta? ¿Alguna vez has empleado otras técnicas artísticas, como el oleo o el pastel?

VT: As I already mentioned, I used oil painting and pastel and I am still using them on wood but this time in a different way in order restructure wood. / Como he mencionado, trabajé al oleo y al pastel, y aún los utilizo sobre la madera, pero, esta vez, lo hago de otro modo, con la intención de reestructurar la madera.

IEF: In which ways could your art works be influenced by the impressionist pictorical movement? / ¿De qué modo podría estar tu obra influenciada por el movimiento pictórico del Impresionismo?
VT: Only when I have to do with the capture of the moment. / Sólo en lo que respecta a la intención de capturar el momento.
IEF: If you had to choose the work of an impressionist painter, which one calls your attention the most? Is there any masterpiece you like in particular? / IEF: Si tuvieses que escoger la obra de un pintor impresionista en concreto, ¿cuál llamaría en mayor grado tu atención? ¿Hay alguna obra maestra que te guste especialmente?
VT: I consider impressionists as great innovators that made the difference at the time. The revolution that they created is deeply recognized and their contribution in art is immense. The whole idea of the strong color, the capture of the moment and the ordinary scenery that is presented in their artworks proves, even nowadays, the greatness behind simplicity. I distinguish Monet for his work as much as for his life. / VT: Concibo a los impresionistas como grandes innovadores que marcaron la diferencia en aquella época. El revuelo que causaron en el mundo del arte está profundamente reconocido y su contribución al arte es inmensa. La idea de utilizar colores vivos, capturar el momento, junto con los escenarios representados en sus obras constituye, incluso hoy en día, una muestra de la genialidad que se esconde tras aparente simplicidad. Distinguiría a Monet tanto por su obra como por su vida.
IEF: What is your opinion about those women (Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Suzanne Valadon…) that conceived painting as the way to express their feelings and likes, even when women dedicated to arts were not well done considerated by that time? / IEF: ¿Qué opinión te merecen esas mujeres (Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Suzanne Valadon…) que concibieron el arte como la forma de expresión de sus sentimientos y aficiones, en una época en la que las mujeres dedicadas al arte no estaban bien consideradas por la sociedad?
VT: Those women, as every other woman who has dedicated her life to art, are highly respected. Especially during that era when the stereotype for women was totally different. Imagine a woman, who is the main creator of human’s life, of the ultimate piece, denying his nature and giving herself completely to a form of art that expresses her personality. I consider that, truly amazing and admirable. / VT: Esas mujeres, al igual que cualquier otra mujer que haya dedicado su vida al arte, son muy respetadas. Especialmente en aquella época en la que el estereotipo de mujer era totalmente distinto. Imagina una mujer, creadora de la vida, renunciando a su naturalidad y entregándose por entero a una forma artística que exprese su personalidad. Considero que es algo rotundamente admirable.

IEF: Your art works, full of brightness and color, might transmit happiness and life optimism, what reminds me, in some way, to Renoir art works. ¿what do you think about it? / IEF: Tus obras de arte, con gran color y luminosidad, parece que transmitan alegría y ganas de vivir, lo que me recuerda, de algún modo, a la obra de Renoir. ¿Qué opinarías al respecto?
VT: Thank you! I am not sure I if can be compared to this great painter and teacher. The truth is I admire him. I strongly believe that there is no parthenogenesis in art and we are all influenced by our forefathers. / VT: ¡Gracias! No estoy seguro de que pueda ser comparado con este gran pintor y maestro. Lo cierto es que lo admiro. Creo realmente que no existe la partenogénesis en arte y que todos estamos influidos por nuestros antecesores.
IEF: In 2011, you painted ‘Al. Papadiamantis’, a portrait of the Greece writer, most known for the tales he wrote. Is this an exception to your works, or do you think you will continue portraying more known people in a future? If it is affirmative, is there any famous person whose image you’d like to use in your works? / IEF: En 2011, pintaste la obra ‘Al. Papadiamantis’, un retrato del escritor griego, mayormente conocido por sus cuentos. ¿Es esta una excepción en tu obra, o piensas continuar retratando a más personalidades? En caso afirmativo, ¿hay alguna persona famosa cuya imagen te gustaría utilizar especialmente en alguna de tus obras?

VT: I am not interested in portraying people. Alexandros Papadiamantis is one of the most important Greek writers and he inspired me to create his portrait. / VT: No estoy interesado en retratar a las personas. Alexandros Papadiamantis es uno de los escritoires griegos más importantes, y ello me inspiró para elaborar su retrato.
IEF: One more question before finishing: although this is not your first exhibition, some of your works are now on display in New York. What goes then? Are you thinking about any other exhibition in Europe soon? / IEF: Una última pregunta antes de terminar la entrevista: aunque esta no es tu primera exposición, algunas de tus obras pueden ser visitadas ahora en Nueva York. ¿Qué vendrá después? ¿Tienes pensado exponer en Europa en un futuro próximo?
VT: I am going participate in an exhibition realized in one of Gaudi’s buildings in Barcelona this coming July. I am looking forward in more exhibitions in the near future. / VT: Voy a tomar parte en una exposición que se realizará en uno de los edificios de Gaudí en Barcelona durante el próximo mes de julio. Espero participar en nuevas exposiciones en un futuro próximo.
